Box Office Breakdown: Another Win for Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus got a big treat in her goodie basket this weekend.
Just over a year after breaking a record for Super Bowl weekend releases, the tween idol has made waves again. The 16-year-old’s new film is now the 2nd best Easter opener ever. Hannah Montana: The Movie slowed down last week’s hot property, Fast & Furious, to win the holiday frame. Cyrus’ 2-D offering pulled in $32.3 million and earned the best first-day ever for a live-action G-rated feature.
The only other wide releases last weekend were Observe and Report and Dragonball: Evolution. Although Paul Blart debuted to a surprising $40 million, Seth Rogen’s mall comedy earned only $11 million and a fourth place-finish. (Observe did do slightly better than Zack and Miri‘s $10.1 million premiere.) Dragonball, in the meantime, barely went noticed with its $4.7 million take. That was just enough for a Top Ten appearance.

Jessica Biel Turns to Stripping for Powder Blue
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Independent, Casting, Trailers, Upcoming Releases,
For some reason, Justin Timberlake’s ladies really like working a pole.
In the upcoming movie, Powder Blue, four random characters find themselves coming together on Christmas Eve. Jessica Biel, who once again aims to be remembered for her acting, will play a stripper trying to raise funds for her terminally-ill son.
As you can see in the trailer, the producers have relied on very little words - and many images of Jessica - to draw you into the story. (In case the quick edits had you wondering, that was an egg you saw cracked on Biel’s chest.)
Powder Blue also stars Forest Whitaker, Ray Liotta and Patrick Swayze. The movie is scheduled for release sometime in 2009.

Youth in Revolt Finally Starts Casting

Producers of the upcoming C.D. Payne adaptation, Youth in Revolt, decided to spill the beans on developments in casting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
While Nick Twisp’s shoes have long-since been filled in by Michael Cera, fans of the novel had been curious as to which actors would fill the rest of the slots, as all the roles are quite difficult to tackle. That is, until now! Steve Buscemi will be playing Twisp’s playboy, two-timing father George Twisp while Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, and M. Emmet Walsh have jumped aboard as well.
The Good Girl director Miguel Arteta is attached to the film, adapted by Charlie Bartlett writer Gustin Nash.
